    Tour Overview

A 3-day Ouarzazate desert and kasbahs tour is the ultimate way to experience southern Morocco from airport to Sahara. This tour combines a scenic drive through the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs with visits to Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, and Todra Gorge, two nights at a luxury Sahara desert camp, nomad family visits, Gnawa music in Khamlia, and exploration of Rissani or the dramatic Gara Medouar natural amphitheatre.

Starting from Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ), this 3-day journey takes you across the full breadth of southeastern Morocco’s most extraordinary landscapes. Day 1 follows the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Skoura, the Dades Valley, and the towering Todra Gorge, arriving at Sahara Dunes Camp for a sunset camel trek and your first desert night.

Day 2 is dedicated entirely to desert immersion — a nomad family visit, traditional Gnawa music in Khamlia, sandboarding, and a second night under the stars. Day 3 offers the choice of exploring the ancient Rissani souk or the hidden Gara Medouar before your onward transfer.

We designed this 3-day itinerary because we believe the desert deserves more than a single night. Two nights in the Sahara changes everything — you stop counting time and start feeling the place. Our family has welcomed guests on this route since 2010, and these three days represent the very best of what our region offers.

    Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Ouarzazate Airport → Road of 1000 Kasbahs → Skoura → Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga → Sahara Dunes Camp

Pickup: At your flight arrival time at Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ)

Your experienced Berber driver meets you at the airport with a name sign. Load your luggage into the private, air-conditioned 4×4 and begin the epic drive east toward the Sahara Desert through some of Morocco’s most breathtaking scenery.

Skoura Oasis: Your first stop is this lush palm oasis, home to the striking Kasbah Amridil — one of the most photographed kasbahs in Morocco. The contrast of green palms against the red desert mountains creates a landscape that feels like stepping into a painting.

Dades Valley: Continue along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Dades Valley. Ancient fortified villages line both sides of the road, their red-brown towers rising from the rocky landscape. Stop for photos at the dramatic Monkey Fingers rock formations — towering geological pillars carved by wind and water over millions of years.

Todra Gorge: Arrive at the spectacular Todra Gorge — a narrow canyon with 300-metre-high rock walls that nearly touch above a shallow riverbed. Walk through the gorge and feel the temperature drop as the massive cliffs block the sun. This is one of Morocco’s most awe-inspiring geological formations.

Continue east through Erfoud as the landscape opens into golden desert. Arrive at Sahara Dunes Camp in the late afternoon. Your hosts welcome you with traditional mint tea and dates.

Late afternoon: Mount your camel for a sunset camel trek into the heart of Erg Chebbi — the towering golden dunes of the Sahara. Watch the light transform the sand from bright gold to deep amber as the sun sets.

Evening: Traditional multi-course Berber dinner — tagine, salads, fresh bread, and seasonal fruit. After dinner, gather around the campfire for Berber drumming, music, and storytelling under a sky filled with millions of stars.

Accommodation: Luxury Desert Tent at Sahara Dunes Camp (dinner & breakfast included)

Day 2: Sahara Sunrise → Nomad Visit → Khamlia Village → Sand Dune Activities

Early morning: Rise before dawn for your first Sahara sunrise. Climb a nearby dune and watch the desert come alive — the first rays of light create long shadows across the rippled sand, and the silence is absolute. Return to camp for a leisurely breakfast.

Morning: Drive into the surrounding desert landscape to visit a local nomad family. These semi-nomadic Berber families live in traditional tents, herding goats and camels across the harsh terrain. Share mint tea with the family, learn about their daily routines, seasonal migrations, and the traditions they’ve maintained for centuries. This is one of the most authentic cultural encounters available in Morocco — no scripts, no performances, just real life in the desert.

Late morning: Visit Khamlia, a small village nestled at the edge of the dunes. Khamlia is home to the Gnawa people — descendants of sub-Saharan African communities who brought their distinctive spiritual music traditions to Morocco centuries ago. Enjoy a private Gnawa music performance — the rhythmic singing, hand-clapping, and deep vibrations of the guembri instrument are hypnotic and deeply moving.

Afternoon: Return to the dunes for sand dune activities. Try sandboarding down the steep slopes of Erg Chebbi, explore the dunes on foot to discover their ever-changing patterns, or simply relax on the camp terrace with a book and the view. Optional add-ons include quad biking (~400 MAD) or a 4×4 dune bashing experience.

Evening: Your second desert night. A different Berber dinner menu, more campfire music, and — if you look closely — you may see shooting stars. Many guests say the second night is when the desert truly sinks in.

Accommodation: Luxury Desert Tent at Sahara Dunes Camp (dinner & breakfast included)

Day 3: Rissani or Gara Medouar Exploration → Transfer

Morning: Your second Sahara sunrise — each one is different. Enjoy a final breakfast at camp, savour the last quiet moments in the desert.

After checkout, your driver picks you up for the final day of exploration. Choose between two options:

Option A — Rissani Souk: Visit the historic town of Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region and birthplace of Morocco’s Alaouite dynasty. Explore the vibrant traditional souk — one of the most authentic markets in southeastern Morocco — where local Berbers trade dates, spices, leather goods, and handicrafts. Visit the ornate Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif and the old ksour (fortified granaries) surrounding the town.

Option B — Gara Medouar: Explore the dramatic Gara Medouar — a massive natural rock amphitheatre in the desert, approximately 50 km northwest of Merzouga. This ancient geological formation looks like a meteor crater — a vast circular depression surrounded by layered rock walls, offering extraordinary panoramic views of the surrounding hammada. Used as a filming location for international productions, this hidden gem receives almost no tourists.

Onward journey: After your morning exploration, your driver transfers you to Ouarzazate Airport for your departure flight, or drops you at your next destination anywhere in the region.

End of tour: Drop-off at Ouarzazate Airport or your chosen location

    FAQ

Why choose the 3-day tour over the 1-day or 2-day option?

Three days gives you the full experience — Day 1 for the spectacular drive through gorges and kasbahs, Day 2 for authentic cultural encounters and desert activities, and Day 3 for exploring Rissani or Gara Medouar. Two nights in the desert allows you to truly settle in and experience the Sahara beyond just “visiting.”

Does this tour include Ait Ben Haddou?

Ait Ben Haddou is located west of Ouarzazate, in the opposite direction from Merzouga. It’s not on the standard route, but we can add a visit as an extra stop before heading east on Day 1 — just mention it when booking. Contact us on WhatsApp at +212653865776 or +212613588562.

What is the best season for this tour?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summer is very hot (40°C+ during the day), while winter nights in the desert can approach 0°C — but clear winter skies make for the best stargazing. All seasons have their beauty.

Are the desert activities suitable for all ages?

Yes, this tour welcomes all ages. The camel trek is gentle and suitable for children (minimum age 4). Sandboarding is optional and fun for all fitness levels. The nomad visit and Khamlia music are cultural experiences that families particularly enjoy.

Can I extend my stay at Sahara Dunes Camp?

Absolutely. Many guests choose to add extra nights. Additional nights include dinner, breakfast, and all camp activities. Just let us know when booking.
