An Ouarzazate Airport transfer to Merzouga covers approximately 360 km via the spectacular Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, Dades Valley, and Todra Gorge. Sahara Dunes Camp provides private pickup directly at Ouarzazate Airport with an air-conditioned 4×4, turning the journey into a full sightseeing experience with multiple photo stops along one of Morocco’s most beautiful driving routes.
Flying into Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) — the “Gateway to the Desert” — puts you on one of Morocco’s most scenic drives to the Sahara. Rather than simply transferring you from A to B, we transform the 6-hour journey into a curated sightseeing drive through the dramatic landscapes of southern Morocco.
Your experienced Berber driver takes you east along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, through the lush Dades Valley with its fortified villages, past the towering 300-metre canyon walls of Todra Gorge, and across the desert plains to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. You arrive at Sahara Dunes Camp for a sunset camel trek, traditional dinner, and a night under the stars.
The following day, we provide a return transfer back to Ouarzazate Airport. This route is one our family has driven thousands of times — we know every kasbah, every gorge, and every perfect place to stop for a photo.
Pickup: At your flight arrival time at Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ)
Your Berber driver meets you at the airport with a name sign and helps load your luggage into a private, air-conditioned 4×4 vehicle. After a welcome and cold water, the journey east begins along one of Morocco’s most spectacular driving routes.
Morning/Midday: Drive the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs — a stunning corridor of ancient fortified villages, palm oases, and dramatic desert scenery. Pass through the Skoura Oasis, home to the remarkable Kasbah Amridil, and continue into the Dades Valley. This landscape of towering rock formations and lush green palms against the red desert backdrop is quintessential Morocco.
Afternoon: Stop at the breathtaking Todra Gorge — a dramatic canyon where 300-metre-high rock walls nearly touch above a narrow riverbed. Walk through the gorge and feel the cool shade of these towering natural formations. This is one of Morocco’s most impressive geological sites and a paradise for photographers.
Continue east through the desert landscapes, passing through Tinjdad and Erfoud as the terrain transitions from rocky hammada to soft golden sand. The first sight of the towering Erg Chebbi dunes on the horizon is a moment you won’t forget.
Arrive at Sahara Dunes Camp in the late afternoon. Your hosts welcome you with traditional mint tea and dates. Mount your camel for a sunset camel trek into the heart of the dunes — watching the sand shift from gold to deep amber as the sun sets over the Sahara.
Evening: Enjoy a traditional multi-course Berber dinner at camp, followed by drumming, music, and storytelling around the campfire. Step outside your tent to see millions of stars — the Sahara offers some of the clearest night skies on Earth.
Accommodation: Luxury Desert Tent at Sahara Dunes Camp (dinner & breakfast included)
Morning: Wake before dawn for the Sahara sunrise — climb a nearby dune and watch the first light transform the desert. Return to camp for a leisurely breakfast.
After checkout, your driver takes you on the return journey to Ouarzazate Airport for your departure flight. The return follows the same scenic route, with stops as needed.
Drop-off: Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) — timed to your flight departure
Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) is approximately 360 km from Merzouga. The drive takes around 6 hours with scenic stops at Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, making it a beautiful sightseeing journey rather than just a transfer.
We recommend flights arriving before 10:00 AM to allow comfortable time for sightseeing stops and to reach camp for the sunset camel trek. Later arrivals are possible — we’ll adjust the route accordingly.
Yes, the road is a well-maintained tarmac highway. Your experienced Berber driver has driven this route thousands of times. The road passes through towns and villages, so there are regular stops for fuel and refreshments.
Ait Ben Haddou is located west of Ouarzazate, in the opposite direction from Merzouga. If you’d like to visit, we recommend our 3-Day Ouarzazate Desert & Kasbahs Tour which includes Ait Ben Haddou on the itinerary.
