    Tour Overview

A 3-day desert experience from Errachidia Airport is the most immersive way to discover the Sahara region of southeastern Morocco. This tour combines airport pickup, scenic sightseeing through the Ziz Gorge, two nights at a luxury desert camp, a sunset camel trek, visits to nomad families and the Gnawa village of Khamlia, and optional exploration of Rissani or Gara Medouar.

This 3-day tour is designed for travelers who want more than a quick overnight in the desert. Starting from Errachidia Airport (ERH), your Berber driver takes you through the spectacular Ziz Gorge — one of Morocco’s deepest canyons — past the fossil-rich town of Erfoud, and into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.

With two full nights at Sahara Dunes Camp, you have time to truly connect with the desert. Day 2 is dedicated to authentic experiences — a nomad family visit in the desert, traditional music at the Gnawa village of Khamlia, and sand dune activities including sandboarding. On Day 3, explore the historic Rissani souk or the dramatic natural amphitheatre of Gara Medouar before your onward transfer.

We built this itinerary because most desert tours feel rushed. Three days lets the Sahara reveal itself — from the first golden sunset to the last quiet morning. Our team has lived in this region for generations and these are the places we love most.

    Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Errachidia Airport → Ziz Gorge → Erfoud Fossils → Merzouga → Sahara Dunes Camp

Pickup: At your flight arrival time at Errachidia Airport (ERH)

Your Berber driver greets you at the airport with a name sign. After loading your luggage into the air-conditioned 4×4, the journey to the Sahara begins.

Drive south through the spectacular Ziz Gorge — a deep canyon carved by the Ziz River over millions of years. Stop at the panoramic viewpoint to photograph the dramatic landscape of red cliffs, palm groves, and Berber villages clinging to the valley walls. This is one of Morocco’s most underrated natural wonders.

Continue to Erfoud, the fossil capital of Morocco. Visit a fossil marble workshop where artisans cut and polish stone to reveal 350-million-year-old ammonites, orthoceras, and trilobites — ancient marine creatures preserved from when the Sahara was under the sea.

Arrive at Sahara Dunes Camp at the foot of the towering Erg Chebbi dunes. Welcome with traditional mint tea and dates. In the late afternoon, mount your camel for a sunset camel trek deep into the golden dunes.

Evening: Traditional multi-course Berber dinner followed by campfire drumming, music, and storytelling under a sky filled with stars.

Accommodation: Luxury Desert Tent at Sahara Dunes Camp (dinner & breakfast included)

Day 2: Sahara Sunrise → Nomad Visit → Khamlia Village → Sand Dune Activities

Early morning: Rise before dawn and climb a nearby dune for the Sahara sunrise — watch the first light paint the sand in shades of gold, orange, and pink. Return to camp for a leisurely breakfast.

Morning: Drive into the surrounding desert to visit a local nomad family. These semi-nomadic Berber families live in traditional tents and herd goats and camels in the harsh desert landscape. Share mint tea with the family and learn about their daily life, traditions, and how they navigate the desert seasons. This is one of the most genuine cultural encounters in Morocco.

Late morning: Continue to Khamlia, a small village at the edge of the dunes. Khamlia is home to the Gnawa people — descendants of sub-Saharan African communities who brought their distinctive spiritual music traditions to Morocco centuries ago. Enjoy a private Gnawa music performance in a traditional house — rhythmic singing, hand-clapping, and the deep tones of the guembri instrument.

Afternoon: Return to the dunes for sand dune activities — try your hand at sandboarding down the towering slopes of Erg Chebbi, explore the dunes on foot, or simply relax at camp. Optional add-ons include quad biking or a 4×4 dune bashing experience.

Evening: Second night of Berber dinner, campfire, and stargazing — each night in the desert feels different. Tonight the sky may be even clearer.

Accommodation: Luxury Desert Tent at Sahara Dunes Camp (dinner & breakfast included)

Day 3: Rissani or Gara Medouar Exploration → Transfer

Morning: Enjoy your second Sahara sunrise and a final breakfast at camp. After checkout, your driver picks you up for the last day of exploration.

Option A — Rissani Souk: Visit the historic town of Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region and birthplace of Morocco’s royal dynasty. Explore the vibrant traditional souk — one of the most authentic markets in southeastern Morocco — where local Berbers trade dates, spices, leather goods, and handicrafts. Visit the ornate Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif.

Option B — Gara Medouar: Explore the dramatic Gara Medouar — a massive natural rock amphitheatre in the desert, approximately 50 km northwest of Merzouga. This ancient geological formation was used as a filming location and offers extraordinary panoramic views of the surrounding hammada (rocky desert). A hidden gem that very few tourists know about.

Onward journey: After your morning exploration, your driver transfers you to Errachidia Airport for your departure flight, or drops you at a local hotel if you’re continuing your Morocco adventure.

End of tour: Drop-off at Errachidia Airport or your chosen location

    FAQ

Why choose 3 days instead of 1 or 2?

Three days allows you to experience the Sahara at a natural pace — two sunrises, two starlit nights, and a full day dedicated to cultural encounters like the nomad visit and Khamlia music. Most guests who stay 3 days say they wish they’d booked even longer.

    What is Khamlia village?

Khamlia is a small village near Merzouga, home to the Gnawa people — descendants of sub-Saharan African communities. They are known for their distinctive spiritual music traditions. A visit includes a private performance of their rhythmic songs and guembri instrument.

    What is Gara Medouar?

Gara Medouar is a dramatic natural rock amphitheatre located about 50 km northwest of Merzouga. This geological formation resembles a massive crater and has been used as a filming location. Very few tourists visit, making it a unique off-the-beaten-path experience.

Can I add extra activities like quad biking?

Yes, optional activities can be arranged at the camp including quad biking (~600 MAD), 4×4 dune bashing, and extended camel treks. Just ask your driver or contact us on WhatsApp at +212653865776 or +212613588562.

What should I pack for 3 days in the desert?

Light clothing for daytime, warm layers for desert nights (temperatures drop significantly after sunset), sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfortable closed shoes for camel trekking, a camera, and a power bank. The camp provides all bedding, towels, and toiletries.
