Our Story

Family-Run Luxury in the Heart of the Sahara

Welcome to Sahara Dunes Camp, where authentic Berber hospitality meets luxury desert comfort. Founded by the Ouhaga family, our camp in Tessardmin offers an intimate, personalized experience under the stars of Erg Chebbi.

Who We Are

A Family Camp in the Heart of Erg Chebbi

We are a small, family-run camp settled at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, just outside Merzouga in southern Morocco. Everything here — from the way the tents are furnished to the meals we serve each evening — reflects the Berber heritage of the families who built and run this camp.

Erg Chebbi is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Sahara. The dunes rise to over 150 metres, shift colour from pale gold at noon to deep amber at sunset, and fall completely silent after dark. We have made our home here so that you can experience all of that — closely, quietly, and without the noise of mass tourism.

Our camp is intentionally small. We keep the number of tents limited so that every guest receives genuine attention, real hospitality, and a stay that feels personal rather than packaged.

How We Think

Comfort and Authenticity Are Not Opposites

There is a version of desert tourism that gives you a canvas tent, a thin mattress, and calls it an adventure. That is not what we do.

There is another version that wraps the desert in so much luxury that you could be anywhere in the world. That is not what we do either.

Sahara Dunes Camp sits in the space between. Every tent is genuinely furnished with handwoven Moroccan rugs, carved lanterns, and traditional textiles — because these things are beautiful and because they are honest to where you are. And every tent also has a real bed with quality linens, a private hot shower, electricity, and free Wi-Fi — because comfort is not a compromise, it is part of the experience.

We believe the best desert stay is one where nothing pulls you out of the moment. Where you fall asleep to the silence of the dunes and wake up to a sky still full of stars — and where the tea is already warm when you step outside.

The People Behind the Camp

Guided by Locals. Shaped by Experience.

Every person who works at Sahara Dunes Camp is from the region. Our guides grew up reading the dunes the way others read maps. Our kitchen team cooks the same tagines and harira their grandmothers made. Our camp staff speak the language of Berber hospitality — attentive, warm, and never intrusive.

When you arrive at our camp — whether by camel at sunset or by 4×4 in the early evening — you are not greeted by a uniform. You are welcomed by a person who genuinely wants your time in the Sahara to be extraordinary.
That is the difference a local-run camp makes. And it is a difference you feel from the first cup of mint tea.

Our Values

What Guides Everything We Do
At Sahara Dunes Camp, we believe true luxury is rooted in responsibility. Every decision we make is guided by a deep respect for the Sahara’s fragile ecosystem, the rich Berber heritage, and the local community that calls this desert home.

Authenticity

We share real Berber culture, not staged performances. Our hospitality is genuine, rooted in generations of desert living, ensuring every guest connects with the true soul of the Sahara.

Sustainability

We protect the fragile desert ecosystem for future generations. Our camp operates with solar power, strict water conservation measures, and comprehensive waste reduction practices.

Community

We prioritize employing local guides and supporting artisans. Our goal is to ensure tourism directly benefits the families of Tessardmin, Hassilbid and Rissani, preserving local traditions while creating economic opportunity.
